Brief Info on M1-Carbine / M1A1 `Paratrooper`

The M1 carbine was originally designed to replace the .45-caliber Model 1911 and the submachine gun. Its purpose was to put an offensive arm in the hands of support troops who weren't frontline infantry, but who could suddenly find themselves on the frontline, given the fluidity of modern warfare. It didn't work out that way. The carbine became so popular it served in a frontline role from through Korea and into Vietnam. It was also parcelled out by Uncle Sam by the tens of thousands to friendly regimes throughout the world.

The M1A1 design is simply an M1 carbine modified for airborne use by fitting it with a folding metal stock and pistol grip. Folded and carried in a canvas holster strapped to the leg of a paratrooper, it took part in every major air·drop  of WWII.
